  • Coast Independent Review Board (Coast IRB) recently announced its decision to open a new operations center at 5475 Mark Dabling Boulevard that is expected to employ 180 in Colorado Springs over the next five years. Coast IRB, headquartered in Orange County, California, monitors patient safety in new drug and medical device studies for over 1,000 pharmaceutical and biotech companies and 15,000 doctors in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. EDC is pleased to welcome Coast IRB to the growing local presence of biotech and pharmaceutical companies. www.coastirb.com.

  • FedEx Corporation recently confirmed plans for an expanded data center with additional employees expected to be added at the Colorado Springs site. The new 113,400 square foot facility will be adjacent to the 153,000 square foot FedEx Rocky Mountain Technology Center which employs 620 technology workers.   • MARKETING UPDATE: EDC added 16 new prospects in the month of February. This brings the current number to 27, year to date, which is the highest level of prospect activity in over six years. The Marketing Team made two prospect trips to California, conducted meetings with a number of site selection consultants and attended the Medical Device & Manufacturing Show in Anaheim. Many of the new prospects are small to medium-sized manufacturers that are leaving California due to the high cost of doing business, poor quality of the workforce and regulatory environment.

  • EDC continues to advance the California Marketing and Public Relations Campaign. A two-page advertorial on the Colorado Springs medical device industry appeared in the Orange County Business Journal to coincide with the Medical Device & Manufacturing Show. A full-page ad about the medical device industry was also placed in a special edition of the San Fernando Valley Business Times oriented to medical device companies in the Valley. An additional ad focusing on the Colorado Springs information technology industry was placed in the San Diego Times.

  • The Colorado Defense Mission Coalition (CDMC) was recently formed under the leadership of EDC, The Quality Community Group and other community leaders to address the community’s response to increasing troop levels at Fort Carson. CDMC has brought agency heads, business leaders, non-profit stakeholders and elected officials together to discuss preparations to accommodate the growth that will result from these large and rapid increases. The Fort Carson Regional Growth Coordination Plan will assess the impacts of the expansion of Fort Carson on the region and provide a coordinated action plan to address them.   • The Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) began accepting applications for the Job Creation Performance Incentive Fund (PIF) and the Enhanced Incentive Program (EIP) in January, 2007. These programs provide performance-based incentives to businesses that create 10 net new jobs, which pay higher than average wages and maintain the jobs for one year. After one year, businesses have 90 days from the last day of the month in which the jobs were filled to submit an application for the funds. Incentives for eligible applications are provided in the order received, until all program funds have been expended. Click here for further information.

  • Colorado Springs utilities ranks 4th lowest for residential rates on the findings of the fourth quarter 2006 ACCRA Cost of Living report on 300 cities in the U.S. Typical residential customers pay the lowest energy bills of all major cities in Colorado averaging $112.08 for combined electric and natural gas/fuel oil bills compared to the state’s average of $144.78. Charges to residential customers rank 4th in the nation compared to the national average of $159.81.

  • USAA was recently ranked No. 1 in customer service by consumers and JD Power in BusinessWeek’s first-ever “Customer Service Champs”. Cadillac, Edward Jones, Lexus, UPS, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Starbucks were also listed among the top ten. Congratulations to the management and employees who represent these companies in our region.

  • Colorado Springs and Colorado continue to garner very favorable national rankings. Colorado Springs was ranked the 4th greatest place to live according to Earth Day Network’s new environmental card. The Kauffman Foundations’ Information Technology and Innovation Foundation recently ranked Colorado 9th among states experiencing above-average economic growth.   • China continues to be a major factor in the global economy and is expected to keep up a torrid pace, according to the Kiplinger Washington Editors. This year will see a 10% gain in gross domestic product, just below 10.7% in 2006. China will soon have the third-largest economy, after the U.S. and Japan.

  • Upcoming Events: Please mark your calendars for the EDC Gala to be held May 5th at The Broadmoor International Center. Back by popular demand is The Broadmoor Pops Orchestra. This outstanding 33 person orchestra has proven to be the most popular entertainment in the history of this event. For added fun, Peter Husak will be the Auctioneer for the Live Auction.   • A golf tournament to benefit FalconWorks, a non-profit that works with the USAFA to bring together resources to design and build technology-based solutions for the disabled, will be held May 12, 7:00 a.m. at the Canterberry Club in Parker. Go to www.falconworks.org for more information.
