  • New jobs and prospect activity outpacing 2006.  The number of companies making announcements to relocate or expand operations in Colorado Springs has nearly doubled and the number of new jobs associated with those announcements, 993 year to date, is triple those announced in 2006 for the same period. EDC has seen prospect activity remain strong through the first and second quarters of 2007.  EDC has received 60 new prospect inquiries since January, a 58% increase over the same period in 2006.  EDC's marketing team recently met with a number of companies and consultants during several trips and trade shows.  EDC partnered with the Colorado Space Coalition and the Convention and Visitor's Bureau in welcoming more than 6,000 conference attendees to the National Space Symposium.  EDC also participated in the CoreNet Global Summit in Denver, where thousands of site selectors, real estate executives and economic development professionals gathered to discuss global and national trends in real estate.  EDC hosted (with help from Terry Sullivan) several site selection professionals from Atlanta, Chicago and D.C. for a flyfishing experience at Twelve Mile Reservoir. The Marketing Team also participated in the Storage Networking World Conference in San Diego and hosted a Colorado Springs reception for data storage companies.  Members of the data storage committee were on hand to promote Colorado Springs.  Site Selection magazine featured Colorado Springs as an area of focus for new expansion opportunities.  Click here for full article.  (Insert link here to the article)  The net effect of all this activity is more leads and more opportunities.
  • EDC's dynamic new marketing video is now available.  The video is part of EDC’s branding campaign initiated over two years ago with the goal of promoting Colorado Springs nationwide as the premier location for companies wishing to relocate or expand.   It would be very helpful if you could augment the marketing campaign by including this video in your presentation to others who may be interested in doing business in our community.  Additionally, investors and community partners are encouraged to add a link to this video on their website. If you have not seen the video it would be worth taking a few minutes to view it on the EDC website at www.coloradosprings.org.  Local Industry Program forms Advisory Board EDC, in cooperation with industry leaders, has formed “The Council for Local Industry” to guide the growth and efforts of the Local Industry program. This program is the premiere provider of services to area primary employers – those whose customers are mostly located outside of this area – about 625 in total. The Local Industry program has been at EDC since late 2004, and serves to maximize employers’ success in El Paso County. This is done by working business climate issues, addressing community problems, connecting employers with local resources, and conducting business retention and expansion isits (BREV)  to companies to get their opinions on the local business climate.  The Council members represent a breadth of industry representation and experience, and include: Barry Baum, Western Forge; Bob Cutter, semiconductor industry consultant; Chris Hufman, T. Rowe Price; Ellen Lary, data storage industry consultant; Kurt Stevens, Booz Allen Hamilton; Rob Whyley, Verizon Business, and Steve Wychulis, CEA Technologies. To learn more about the CSEDC Local Industry Program, please visit www.coloradosprings.org.
  • A major milestone has been achieved in the ongoing efforts to protect Fort Carson from encroachment.   A contract recently signed and approved by the El Paso County Commissioners has L.W.D., LLC conveying to El Paso County 40 lots in Ranch Colorado for a purchase price of $2.16 million.  This significant purchase of land in the buffer zone adjacent to Fort Carson signals considerable progress in addressing the growing encroachment around Fort Carson.  The ultimate goal of the project is to discourage incompatible land use within a one and one-half mile “buffer zone” adjacent to the Fort.  This effort is not part of the controversial Pinon Canyon expansion.  The agreement was reached after more than three years of a cooperative community effort, initiated as part of the Chamber’s Defense Mission Task Force (DMTF), lead by DMTF member Mike Kazmierski (EDC) and supported by Congressional, State and Local elected officials, their staffs, the Nature Conservancy and several community organizations.
  • The Colorado Springs Airport is soliciting competitive bids for a Master Developer with the exclusive development rights to 270 buildable acres of office and light-industrial land in the Airport Business Park., The Airport Business Park is the largest master-planned office development in Colorado Springs including a planned 18-hole golf course and 500 acres of open space.  Developers may also include an optional proposal for a 25-acre hotel site.  Visit www.flycos.com for more details on the Airport Business Park or www.springsgov.com/purchasing to download a copy of the Request for Proposals.
  • Colorado Springs has been ranked a 5 star (top ranking) Knowledge Worker Metro by Expansion Management magazine.  Rankings compared all 362 MSAs on the area’s college-education work force – scientists, engineers, medical doctors, Ph.D.s and others with graduate and post graduate degrees, providing the foundation for the knowledge sector economy.  These communities share one common thread, the presence of one or more major research universities. Colorado Springs has also been ranked 4th in the 2007 Best Cities for Relocating Families by Worldwide ERC and Primary Relocation for small metro areas (350,000 – 575,000 population).  Metro areas were rated based on factors such as crime rate, cost of living, education, climate and housing market. Housing data evaluated ranged from affordability to property tax and rate of appreciation.
  • Colorado company profiles invited on the website for Colorado’s Japan office.  Japan has consistently ranked among Colorado’s top five export partners for the last 18 years with Colorado companies exporting approximately $400 million worth of products to Japan in 2006.  Contact Leslie Plomondon, Director Asia, Africa & the Middle East for the Colorado Office of Economic Development & International Trade at Leslie.Plomondon@state.co.us  or (303) 892-3858.  For more news from the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade click here
  • The number of U.S. tech jobs is rising despite fears of outsourcing.  About 5.8 million people worked in the industry in the USA during 2006, according to a study from the tech trade group AeA (formerly the American Electronics Association).  The industry added 146,600 jobs during the year.  Tech accounts for about 5.1% of the U.S. private-sector workforce.  The study reported over 158,000 jobs in Colorado with an average salary of $80,225.  (Source: USA Today.)
  • Air traffic congestion will worsen as the number of flights needed skyrockets to accommodate a billion passengers a year by 2015, up 25% compared to this year.  By 2015 36% of flights will run late, compared with about 25% now.  Expect more business-class-only flights, air taxi service, executive jet-share arrangements, and very light jets for up to six passengers, which can weigh less than an SUV and cost around $1.5 million.  (Source: The Kiplinger Letter.)
  • The 2006 EDC Leadership Awards were presented at the EDC Gala on May 5th at The Broadmoor.  Recipients of the awards were T. Rowe Price, dpiX, LLC, Citizens for Effective Government/Issues 200-201, Penrose St. Francis Medical Health Services, Lyda Hill, Keller Homes, Inc., Nor’wood Development Group, La Plata Investments, LLC, Terry Harris, Dr. Ken Vedra, Al Steiner, Bob Burdick, Dr. Ellen Lary, Beth Lee, Laura McGuire and Steve Sharkey.  Click here for full details
  • EDC recently lost a dear friend and leader with the sudden passing of Ken Sparks.  Ken served as board Chairman and Fundraising Chairman, following in the steps of his close friend Gil Johnson.  He also served as a member of the Colorado Economic Development Commission. Ken was a tough legal professional with a crisp sense of humor and a heart of gold.  He will be remembered by his friends at EDC for his exceptional contribution to the organization and the numerous ways in which he positively impacted the lives of others in our community.
