  • EDC has announced 550 jobs, year to date, representing relocations or expansions from the following companies: CodeOne, a medical billing headquarters; TechConFed an aerospace headquarters; Nexgen Pharma, Inc. a pharmaceutical manufacturer; Diversified Machine Systems, Inc. a manufacturer of CNC machines and Sticky Sheets a consumer products headquarters firm. During the month of April, EDC received 13 new prospects in a variety of different industries, equaling our total for March. EDC has 12-15 very solid prospects in the pipeline that could result in more than 2,000 new jobs for our community. The economy is struggling nationally so the competition for projects is fierce, yet we remain cautiously optimistic. Click here for more information on EDC’s marketing and recruitment activity.

  • Colorado Springs' efforts to retain the US Olympic Committee reflect a national trend where communities are finding it increasingly challenging – and expensive – to keep some of their marquee companies in town. Here’s a sampling of recent business retention opportunities. In Tacoma, Washington, leaders were faced with retaining the largest employer in downtown Tacoma while other communities including nearby Seattle made their own pitches for the firm. Russell Investment Group, a global financial services firm, currently employs 1,100 people and plans to consolidate operations in a new headquarters facility. To date, officials have assembled a $148 million incentive package that includes the elimination of occupation taxes and $66 million in infrastructure for a new downtown business district. Officials in Washington D.C. are celebrating the decision by National Public Radio (NPR) to build a new headquarters in the District. The celebration comes with a price: property tax breaks worth $40 million over 20 years. In 2007, a $50 million incentive package was instrumental in keeping 2,000 jobs and the headquarters of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in Akron OH. Now, local and state officials are assembling an incentive package to retain the Akron technical center which employs 629 workers. The proposed package includes $68 million in direct and indirect incentives including construction of a new research facility. • State funding for higher education places Colorado 50th in percentage of appropriation of funds according to a report from NCHEMS Information Center for State Higher Education Policymaking and Analysis/Illinois State University. While Colorado is currently ranked 6th in the nation in percentage of adults with a post secondary two-year or four-year degree, the recent report suggests challenges ahead in maintaining a highly skilled and knowledgeable workforce. Click here for more information.

  • Despite some challenges to our competitive advantage, Colorado Springs and Colorado continue to receive positive national rankings. Colorado Springs was recently ranked 10th Smartest Metro according to a recent study by bizjournals. The study’s objective was to identify those markets with the strongest collective brain power, as indicated by their residents’ educational attainment.

  • Colorado has maintained its ranking as 16th among the “2007 Top Twenty Healthiest States” according to a report published by the United Health Foundation. The strengths for Colorado included a low prevalence of obesity at 18.2 percent of the population, few poor physical health days per month at 2.9 days in the previous 30 days, a low rate of cancer deaths at 176.8 deaths per 100,000 population and a low rate of preventable hospitalizations with 56.2 discharges per 1,000 Medicare enrollees. Chris Strauss, Features Editor, Men’s Fitness Magazine, outlined why Colorado Springs recently achieved the coveted ranking of Fittest City in the country at EDC’s luncheon on April 22.
